A while back I bought my wife a subscription to Bitch magazine. Given the title, some people might take such a gift as an insult. But billed as a ”feminist response to pop culture,” the Oakland, Calif.-based, nonprofit quarterly is one of the most consistently engaging and thought-provoking magazines out there, capable of covering serious topics without taking itself too seriously in the process.
Even the ads — for Kelly Link books and therapists and sex toys — are entertaining. No other magazine out there so effectively reveals and repudiates the subtle and frequently unsubtle sexist imagery and language that permeate every facet of our lives.
